Winter Harvest Wrap-up
Our “Winter Harvest” program wrapped up with our last delivery on March 20. Thanks to Maria Thomson for coordinating and to the many volunteers who picked up items, sorted and boxed.

“Winter Harvest” allows local farmers to provide Rowan County consumers with a source of produce, meats, dairy and other items through the winter months. The harsh winter this year hurt normally reliable cold-weather greens, but the occasional lack of fresh produce was made up with fresh whole wheat bread, butter, milk, sausage and other items. One participant said, “This was our first time trying Winter Harvest. We challenged ourselves to refrain from buying grocery store produce and eat only ‘out of the box.’ We came pretty close, supplementing Winter Harvest items with some home-canned green beans and some carrots and broccoli from our own garden. A few items in the box sent us to the Internet for information. Who knew mizuna?”

Suppliers included Sandy Creek Farm in Lexington, Laughing Owl Farm in Richfield, Poplin Farms in Albemarle, and Fisher Farm, Renn Bee Farm, Bame Farms and Wild Turkey Farms, all in Salisbury, Goat Lady Dairy near Asheboro, Homeland Dairy near Alamance and T&D Charloais in China Grove. Many thanks to these farmers for their work.

Welcome to the Winter Harvest Program!

Thank you for expressing interest in being a part of the Winter Harvest Program, offered by The Bread Riot. The Bread Riot cultivates a thriving local economy by facilitating a supply of locally produced food, utilizing sustainable farming practices and focusing on whole-life issues, education, and environmental concern.

Our Winter Harvest Program seeks to connect our members and the community to local farmers during the months that the Farmers Market is closed. It is a unique opportunity to receive fresh, local food during the winter months and discover and enjoy the bounty of the holiday seasons.

What You Will Receive:

Harvest baskets will primarily consist of cool season fruits and vegetables with specialty items such as homemade tomato sauce, mushrooms, and meat products (sausage, bratwrust, etc.).

The program runs from the beginning of November to the end of March/early April, with the first pick-up on Saturday, November 7. Basket pick-ups will be every other week (10 pick-ups) with the exception of the Christmas/New Years time frame. The program may end earlier if our local farmers no longer have produce to offer.

Additionally, one dozen eggs can be added to your basket at each pick-up for $30.

The following is what was provided last year during the first weeks and is similar to what you can expect to receive this year. The cost listed is deducted from your program fee which acts similar to a 'kitty' since every week the cost of the products chosen varies slightly. However, we aim to provide you with a variety of items that add up to $20-25 per week.

  • Week One: Kale, Radishes, Pumpkin, Shiitake Mushrooms, Pak Choi, Fingerling and Baking Sweet Potatoes, and Swiss Chard. $21 p/p. (Shiitakes were the specialty item.)

  • Week Three: Collards, Pecans, Tomato Sauce, Baby Pak Choi, Salad Greens, Shiitake Mushrooms and Ground Sausage. $26 p/p.(Shitake and Sausage were the specialty items.)

How The Progarm Works:

You must decide by October 31stif you would like to participate. The cost is $235 for the program. This is will provide us with a $200 'kitty' to pay for your bi-weekly basket plus a $25 deposit which will be returned upon completion of volunteer work (see below under Participation Requirements), and a $10 registration fee to cover The Bread Riot’s administrative costs to organize and execute the program.

If you choose to add a dozen eggs to your basket, this will cost an additional $30 so the entire amount due will be $265.

You are required to submit a deposit of at least 50%, $117.50 (plus $30 if you wish to add eggs to your bi-weekly basket) by Wednesday, November 4, Noon. This is important! Farmers must know how much food to give us to prepare our order and we must have that information for them by Wednesdays for pick up from them on Fridays.

The remaining balance is due on or before November 30. Your Winter Harvest account ($200) will be debited bi-weekly, depending on the final cost of the basket for that week (see above examples; the cost at the end, i.e. $20-$26 p/p, would be debited from each participants Winter Harvest account for that week).

If, at the end of the program, you have not used the entire $200 'kitty', it will be refunded. Likewise, if you have a balance, you will be expected to pay it then.

You will be given the opportunity to pay using Paypal after you submit your registration form online. Remember, a 50% payment is due by Wednesday, November 4th!

Participation Requirements:

You will receive an email on the Sunday of each pick-up week. You may then pick-up your basket from the porch of 530 W. Monroe St. anytime on Saturday from 9am to 8pm. If you cannot pick up on Saturday, please make arrangements for someone to pick up for you. Any baskets left after 8pm on Saturday will be forfeited. The first pick-up is Saturday, November 7th!

You will need to supply 2 “baskets” for your food (they will be rotated). Please label with your name and phone number. These can be reusable grocery bags, laundry baskets, milk crates, etc., but they need to be dropped off on the porch at 530 W. Monroe St. no later than Friday, November 6 in preparation for the first pick-up.

Volunteer members of the Winter Harvest Program are crucial to the success of the program and our ability to offer this program in the future. Each program participant is required to do one of two things:
t;/span>

  • Drive to the participating farms on a Friday afternoon to pick-up food and then sort into member containers ONE TIME during the program. (You will be given detailed instructions on how to complete farm pick-ups successfully so don't fear...we are here to make this a fun and enjoyable activity. You will have an opportunity to meet our great farmers and see their farms up close!)

OR

  • Sort into member containers following farm pick-up TWO TIMES during the program. Sorting begins when the person who is doing the pick-up returns to 530 West Monroe Street, Salisbury. They should arrive between 5-6 pm.

Once you have completed one of these items, your $25 deposit will be credited back to your Winter Harvest account. Volunteer slots are limited, so you are encouraged to choose a date that suits your schedule. You will be asked to offer a first and second choice on the program registration form. We will work with you to meet this requirement. If you cannot find a date that works for you or you cannot volunteer, the $25 deposit will be a program fee retained by The Bread Riot.

More details on how to volunteer will be available once you have decided to participate in the program.
