Our Winter Harvest Program seeks to connect our members and the community to local farmers during the time of the year when farmers market hours are limited. It is a unique opportunity to receive fresh, local food during the winter months and discover and enjoy the bounty of the holiday seasons.
How it Works:
What You Will Receive:
Food baskets are primarily produce available during the colder months, with additional specialty items. The program runs 20 weeks, from November to March, with the first pick-up on Saturday, November 5th. Food pick-ups will be every other week (10 pick ups).
The following is what was provided last year during the first weeks and is similar to what you can expect to receive this year.
- Week One: Kale, Radishes, Pumpkin, Shiitake Mushrooms, Pak Choi, Fingerling and Baking Sweet Potatoes, and Swiss Chard. $21 p/p. (Shiitakes were the specialty item.)
- Week Three: Collards, Pecans, Tomato Sauce, Baby Pak Choi, Salad Greens, Shiitake Mushrooms and Ground Sausage. $26 p/p.(Shitake and Sausage were the specialty items.)
Additionally eggs can be added for the whole program for $35, or you may add a loaf of white or wheat bread for the whole program for $40. At this time we cannot offer the Fireworks (beer/wine) package. We will notify participants if this changes.
Decide by October 28th if you would like to participate. Cost is $250 for 20 weeks (10 pick-ups).
This cost (your account from which we purchase items for your basket) is based on an estimated basket cost of around $25/pick-up. Plus a $25 deposit which will be returned to your account upon completion of volunteer work (see below), and a $15 registration fee to cover the Bread Riot's administrative costs to organize and execute the program. For a total Base Program amount of $290.
You may also opt to add the Egg Package (1 dozen eggs) to every basket for a cost of $35 or the Bread Package (1 loaf, select white or wheat) to every basket for an additional $40. Your deposit to participate is due by October 28th (see below).
How to Register:
To participate in the program, you must pay at least 50% of the Base Program fee ($125) plus full payment for deposit and registration fee ($165). If you are adding the Egg or Bread Package you must also pay for those in full at this time. You also have the option to pay in full up front.
This is important! Farmers must know how much food to give us to fill our order and we must have that information for them by Wednesdays for pick up from them on Friday.
As an example (in parentheses are the calculations if you plan to pay 50% of Base Program):
The remaining balance of $125 (if applicable) is due on or before January 7, 2012.
Your account will be debited bi-weekly, depending on the final cost of the basket for that week. If, at the end of the program, you have not used the entire account balance, it will be refunded. Likewise, if you have a balance due, you will be expected to pay it then.
Please make your program selections and send payment along with a note specifying if you wish to receive meat items in your basket or if you wish it to be vegetarian.
How to Pay:
You may pay by check or credit card. If you pay by check, please mail to: Sean Meyers, Bread Riot Treasurer, 1622 N. Main St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144. The check should be made payable to Bread Riot.
If you pay by credit card, Bread Riot uses PayPal and you may complete the transaction through the link at the bottom of the page. To assist with covering the fees PayPal charges us to transact your order, we ask that you place the one-time processing charge of $7.50 into your shopping cart.
Whether you pay by check or credit card, you will need to fill out an online information form.
Remember, a 50% payment is due by Friday, October 28th!
How to Participate:
You will receive an email reminder on the Sunday of each pick-up week. You are asked to pick up your basket from the porch of 618 Wiley Avenue anytime on Saturday from 9am to 5pm. If you cannot pick up on Saturday, please make arrangements for someone to pick up for you. Any baskets left after 5pm on Saturday will be forfeited. You may opt out of a pick up by informing us by the Wednesday before a Saturday pick up. Email

.
You will need to supply 2 soft-sided containers for your food (they will be rotated). Please label with your name and phone number on a large, easy to ready tag. We suggest reusable grocery bags as it makes storage from week to week easier. They need to be dropped off on the porch at 618 Wiley Avenue no later than Thursday, November 4th in preparation for the first pick-up.
How to Volunteer:
Volunteer members of the Winter Harvest Program are crucial to the success of the program and our ability to offer this program in the future. Each program participant is required to do one of two things:
- Drive to the participating farms on a Friday afternoon to pick-up food and then sort into member containers ONE TIME during the program. (You will be given detailed instructions on how to complete farm pick-ups successfully so don't fear...we are here to make this a fun and enjoyable activity. You will have an opportunity to meet our great farmers and see their farms up close!)
OR
- Once you have completed one of these items, your $25 deposit will be credited back to your account. Volunteer slots are limited, so you are encouraged to choose a date that suits your schedule. Let us know what you prefer when you send your payment. If you cannot find a date that works for you or you cannot volunteer, the $25 deposit will go to Bread Riot's general fund. More details on how to volunteer will be available once you have decided to participate in the program.
