What is a Co-op? A cooperative is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common economic, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.

What do Co-op's value? Co-operatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others.

Our name Bread Riot refers to the revolt in Rowan County during the Civil War when the women, upset because local merchants were hoarding flour and food supplies while the rest of Rowan County was starving, rioted with axes and hatchets to collect food to feed their community. Our vision of a food source that better feeds our families and also supports our local growers is inspired by the historic bravery and gumption of these Rowan County women.
